I have been concerned about the impact of climate change for many years. While working as a an emergency management advisor, I decided to write a book called, Creating a Better Climate Future. The aim of the book and this website is to provide information and resources to empower and encourage people all over the world to take action on climate change. So that one day soon, there will be an overwhelming momentum for positive change.
I give examples of where I have taken action myself, had setbacks and successes. New content will be added to this site regularly.
Best wishes,
Philip Kent-Hughes
In 1990, the international community agreed to take action on climate change, but emissions have continued to go up. For over thirty years industry and politicians have failed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
We should not wait for permission, and we should not wait for industry or governments anymore. We can take a new direction and create our own positive future. We can do this through our own actions and creating system change.
Philip Kent-Hughes - Creating a Better Climate Future
There are many ways we can reduce our own emissions or contribute to system change. These are included in the sections below. For each section you can click on the link for all the resources. These will updated and added to on a regular basis.
There are many ways we can reduce our emissions and some simple planning can make it easier. This includes getting your household or other people together to create an emissions reduction objective. There is a free workbook that contains guides and planning tools to help you achieve success.
This includes reducing your carbon footprint by reviewing food lifestyle options and ways to reduce food waste. We can start positive conversations about food, spread the word, and look at community groups. There are also actions to influence government, food manufacturers and retailers.
This describes what a circular economy is and what the benefits are for everyone. We can find out more about reducing consumption, refusing unnecessary packaging, reusing, repairing and recycling. There are also options to communicate with brands and service providers.
What are the different options and how to go about switching to renewable energy. There are options for reducing your emissions and your energy bill at the same time. There will be options for encouraging energy providers, stopping new coal and other actions as well.
There are many ways to reduce emissions from personal transport and changing the way we travel. We will be communicating to manufacturers, and operators of land, sea, and air travel.
There are a range of local and international groups who have lots of opportunities for you to get involved. There are groups who take action through protest, habitat restoration such and reafforestation, coastal and river clean-up initiatives, community gardening, and many more.

At different times of the year you can participate in actions which can help you reduce emissions or create positive change. As each month starts, more events will be added.
International annual event are occasions to put a spotlight on issues of concern, spread awareness, as well as mobilizing political change and resources to fix global problems. You can join in at any time and subscribe for monthly updates.
October 13th - International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction
The theme for this year highlights will be on the role of education in protecting and empowering youth for a disaster-free future. Increasing disasters, many of them driven and exacerbated by climate change, threaten the well-being of children and youth. According to UNICEF, approximately one billion children worldwide are at extremely high risk due to climate impacts, including climate-related disasters.

November 11th to 22nd - UN Climate Change Conference COP29
The Conference of the Parties (COP), is an annual meeting where governments assess global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C, informed by the latest science. This year world leaders will meet in Baku, Azerbaijan to present their updated national climate action plans under the Paris agreement. If these include strong action they could limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

November 26th - World Sustainable Transport Day
This year marks the first World Sustainable Transport Day. One aim is to promote safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all. The transport sector is responsible for approximately one quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions.
Whether it’s for work or for pleasure, the choices we make on how we get from one place to another — driving, flying, ferrying, biking, scooting, and public transportation — can have a large impact on carbon emissions. Making informed lifestyle choices when it comes to transport can help us reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality — a win-win!

November 29th - Buy Nothing Day
Buy Nothing Day is a global event held on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, as a protest against consumerism. Started in 1992 by artist Ted Dave and promoted by Adbusters, it encourages people to abstain from shopping for 24 hours to reflect on their consumption habits and promote sustainability. The movement aims to raise awareness of the environmental and social impacts of overconsumption.
The Buy Nothing Project, which grew out of the same values, takes this idea further by encouraging communities to give, share, and exchange goods and services without money year-round. It emphasizes building local networks of generosity, reducing waste, and fostering connections.
To get involved, people can participate in Buy Nothing Day by pledging not to shop and joining events like clothing swaps or repair workshops. For the Buy Nothing Project, joining or starting a local group on social media platforms allows individuals to share items and services within their community, promoting a culture of sharing.

We can rapidly reduce emissions through coordinated actions designed to create positive system change
Despite the international community agreeing to act on climate change in the 1990s, emissions have continued to go up. In many places, corporations and industries have done little or nothing to reduce emissions.
So how do we solve the climate crisis? Research has shown that when 25% of a group agreed on a course of action and were coordinated, then a critical mass can be achieved . This creates a tipping point which has the ability to overturn social conventions, or business as usual (Science 2018). In many places the majority already agree. For example, over 70% of Americans think global warming is happening and that it will harm future generations (Yale 2021).
What can we do? Moving forward, I will post information from as many environmental groups as possible about actions they have planned, so we can get people all over the world participating at the same time. We can amplify our influence on corporations to reduce their emissions. Subscribe to get updates on unified action.

"In the face of ever-increasing temperature and a prevailing sense of resigned helplessness, emergency advisor Kent-Hughes offers something healthier than doom scrolling: a helpful guide on ways that individuals can make a difference in fighting one of the hottest topics in global politics, climate change.
Clear, compact, and practical, Creating A Better Climate Future has been crafted as an encouraging eight-step “emergency plan,” complete with action steps, for making change, becoming “a client hero,” building momentum, and inspiring others. Arguing that “we still have time to turn things around,” Kent-Hughes makes the case that the real problem isn’t carbon emissions—it’s the “obstacles to positive change.”
His guide showcases what everyday people can do to “use the economic system to change itself,” first with some easy wins and then bigger goals that can build upon that foundation. Readers eager to feel that individual efforts contribute to a broader movement will find much that resonates.
Takeaway: Inspiration and action steps for individuals eager to push back against climate change."
